What is a communication skills assessment?
This assessment finds your strengths and growth opportunities quickly. It will help you decide whether you want to develop your soft skills. Here’s how it works.
- First we identify the areas of your job which call for interpersonal skills.
- Then we ask you whether you agree with a series of statements.
This allows us to work out your skill level in several areas.
The test takes less than 10 minutes. As soon as you’ve finished, we’ll generate a report and email it to you. We call it a Communication Profile. It lists your strengths and growth opportunities.
How does the assessment work?
The assessment works in two stages.
Stage 1: What’s involved in your job
In the first stage we assess which parts of your job involve communication skills. You answer questions about how often you need to do certain tasks at work.
Stage 2: Agree/disagree with statements
In the second stage we ask whether you agree with a list of statements. We’ve designed these statements to identify your skill levels. Choose the answer that’s closest to your opinion. (It doesn’t matter if a statement doesn’t fit your role. Pick the option that makes most sense to you.)
Your Communication Profile
As soon as you’ve completed these two stages, we’ll email you a report called a Communication Profile. It includes scores for the skills that we think are important to you. We generate these scores based on your answers.
There’s a page in your Communication Profile for each skill. For each one you’ll find:
- your score (or “skill level”)
- a description of the skill
- the benefits of developing the skill
- why we think it matters to you (based on your answers)
- an explanation of how we assessed your score
We also offer some suggestions of what to do next.
Benefits of taking the test
Communication is a broad topic. It’s hard to tackle it all at once. This assessment helps you focus on what’s most important.
The benefits of taking the test include:
- getting a report that’s specific to your situation
- helping you to identify areas to work on
- it takes less than 10 minutes, with no strings attached
Let’s take each of these benefits in turn.
Get a report that’s specific to your situation
A lot of advice about communication is generic. It may not apply to you. Although most modern jobs call for soft skills, each job is different. For example, some people need to give lots of presentations. Others need to manage stakeholders. The list goes on.
And it’s not just jobs that differ. It’s also people’s skills and experience.
Your answers help us take these differences into account. Telling us what’s involved in your role allows us to focus on relevant topics. And telling us whether you agree with a list of statements helps us to identify skills for you to focus on. Instead of blanket advice, you get a prioritised list of suggestions.
Identify areas to work on
If you want to work on your communication skills, you may not be sure where to start. This assessment helps you to identify starting points. You can think of it as a prioritisation tool.
Your report is our best guess of what you need based on the answers you gave us. Even if it isn’t exactly right, it will give you a good starting point.
We hope you’ll find the report interesting. Maybe it will inspire some more research. Or it might spark a fruitful conversation with a colleague.
Takes less than 10 minutes, with no strings attached
The final benefit is how easy it is to complete. In under 10 minutes you’ll have a custom Communication Profile with ideas for next steps. No need to talk to anyone. No pressure to use our services. No strings attached. And it’s free.

Who is the assessment suitable for?
Do you want to understand more about your interpersonal skills? If so, this test is suitable for you. Whatever your job or level of experience.
For example, you might take it when you:
What’s my next step after I take the test?
That’s up to you!
If you’d like to discuss it with an expert, we offer a free 15-minute consultation. Use it to talk through your Communication Profile. You can book it online.
Another option is to share it with a trusted friend or colleague. It makes a great conversation starter. You could even ask them to complete the assessment as well, and compare notes.
Questions & answers
Here are answers to some common questions.
How can an automated assessment provide useful results?
It’s true that an automated assessment can’t provide the same nuanced advice as a real human being. But that’s not what this assessment is for.
We’ve created a set of questions and a scoring scheme that helps you identify areas that you’d like to focus on. It highlights skills that you may not have considered. It helps you prioritise. And it gives you a starting point for deciding where to focus.
What happens to my data?
We collect anonymous data from the test to understand how people use the service and improve it. We may also use the data to understand trends. This data contains no personally identifiable information.
We also temporarily store your name and email address to prepare the report and send it to you. This data is automatically deleted by our systems 30 days after you complete the test. (This means that after 30 days you can no longer download a copy of your Communication Profile.) If you’d like us to delete this data before 30 days has elapsed, send us a message.
